The COVID-19 pandemic revealed deeply rooted inequities in maternal and child health in the United States. As we emerge from the worst of this crisis, nursing leaders and practitioners alike are realigning to meet the needs of an evolving workforce, disenfranchised communities, and strained institutions. During this year’s opening keynote presentation, taking place Sunday, June 18, from 3-4 pm, Bahby Banks, PhD, MPH, BS, will provide you with strategies to navigate these challenges while creating and fostering inclusive environments for you to thrive. GS2 – Learning from Aftershock Family Members: Creating a World of Human Equity in Perinatal Care  

This panel discussion will address harsh health inequities within the perinatal specialty, methods that can make significant strides to equalize care, and community resources that health care providers can access to create positive change in the lives of Black birthing people. Immerse yourself in real-life stories shared by the panelists to facilitate fostering standardized care for all birthing people with access to and receipt of the same level of deserved care.

GS3 – Dismantling the Stigma of Substance Use Disorder through Research and Lived Experience

This presentation seeks to bring awareness and combat stigma prevalent in the care for birthing persons with substance use disorders (SUD).  Panel experts will provide an update on the latest evidence related to caring for this patient population including ways stigma acts as a barrier to optimal care and practical approaches to reduce social and structural stigma.  In addition, you will hear the inspiring story of a birth mother that has successfully beat the odds and is now helping other mothers on their recovery journey.  Finally, you will hear about the journey of one foster mom as she hopes to inspire you to consider the possibilities of becoming a foster parent or helping these families in crisis beyond the hospital admission.
